Customer Reviews

Great Product5
I bought this to use in conjunction with my Direct TV receiver, Blu-Ray Player, and as a PC Monitor. The picture quality is excellent, especially in HD mode. I purchased two three-way floor speakers to hook up to the provided jacks. The only thing I wish this had was a non-amplified sound output so I could go straight to a sound system. This product ROCKS!!!!

Customer Reviews

Man, what a set !!5
I've had the 58" set up and running for a couple of weeks and could not be any happier. All the good things you've read about it are true. It's big, it's heavy, and it is the best plasma on the market.

I had a hard choice between this plasma TV and the XBR5 Sony LCD. Either would have been great. I'm glad I went with the larger plasma, no regrets. I watch a lot of sports and movies, and this one is the best.

One of the main reasons I choose this Panasonic over other TV's, is a feature that the manufacturers don't also talk about, but I feel is extremely important. That is the 'finish' on the TV's screen, gloss or matte. The gloss finish on most plasmas is real bad, and you can be distracted by objects relected on the screen. The matte finish on most LCD's is great. This Panasonic is somewhere in the middle, and very acceptable.I understand that the 2008 model of their 58" plasma is even more matte. I would not have waited any longer when I bought this TH-58PZ50U model, it is fantastic. Buy one or two!

Plasma at it's Best5
Outstanding Picture. The only word that comes to mind is 3D. I feel like I can each into it and grab the Empire State Building at the opening of the local news. I traded up from a Fujitsu 50" Plasma that I felt was an excellent TV but this blows it away. So now not to get into a lot of technical stuff, buy this and you get an very impressive looking TV, a picture that would cost you 2K plus extra to beat and that is even a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" thing. All the features you would ever want in a TV including an SD slot for viewing your photos right out of your camera, and at least in the case of VANNS (the retailer that shipped mine) you get high line excellent service all the way. This purchase was probably one of the best I've made in years

Panasonic, great value, great TV4
I have had this TV set up for a couple months and have to say it is absolutely stunning. For my money the best sets are either the Panasonic or the Pioneer. In side by side comparisons, the Pioneer was a superior set. The pioneer was also more than $2000 more money. For the savings I was able to upgrade my audio system to play the latest sound formats. The Panasonic is definately the better value. Vann's shipped the TV the next day and it took a little more than a week to get to my house. Very happy with the purchase.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Product Description
The Panasonic TH-50PZ700U 1080p Plasma HDTV sports an impressive 50-inch plasma screen with 1080p resolution for a wonderful viewing experience. It will feel right at home as the centerpiece of a home theater setup.

An Understated Beauty
The TH-50PZ700U does not look like it's trying too hard. Instead, it lets the big screen speak for itself. The glass is surrounded by a thick glossy black bezel on all sides, with a door on the bottom to keep controls out of sight. Another hatch hides a slot for SD memory cards. Speakers--matching in color and barely noticeable--are set on both sides of the display. The understated look would be an elegant addition to any decor.

The understated elegant looks of this Panasonic HDTV will fit in with any decor. View larger.

The TH-50PZ700U has connections for all your home theater components. View larger.
Outstanding Performance
The TH-50PZ700U is 1080p, meaning it has a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, the highest HD resolution available for the clearest and sharpest picture. Because of its plasma display, the black levels are deep and the uniformity of brightness is superb. The unit has 4096 shades of gradation and has up to a 5000:1 contrast ratio. Video noise reduction circuitry and a digital comb filter make sure the picture on screen is always optimal. The TH-50PZ700U will upconvert any signal you feed it and display it at 1080p.

Connections
On the back, the TH-50PZ700U features two HDMI inputs, two component inputs, two composite inputs, and two S-Video inputs. Hidden beneath panels in front is another composite and S-Video input, a component video input, and a slot for SD cards. Insert an SD card filled with photos and you can watch a slide show with the built-in Photo Viewer software.

TV as an Art Gallery
The TH-50PZ700U includes GalleryPlayer software you can use to display high-definition art and photography on your TV. A free collection of images is included so your television can display art even when it's not on.

One-Touch Convenience
When you use the Panasonic EZ-Sync technology to connect to other compatible EZ-Sync devices via the HDMI connector, you get one-touch control over all your home theater components. For example, with one touch of a button, you can turn on the DVD player, turn on the receiver, and set the DVD player as the source while also adjusting the sound level, turn on the TV--which will accept the input signal--and play the DVD. Instead of fumbling to find all the right buttons, you can watch your movies without wondering how to set everything up.

The TH-50PZ700U is backed by a 1-year limited warranty for parts and labor.

What's in the Box
TH-50PZ700U plasma HDTV, remote control (with batteries), AC cord, pedestal, two cable clamper, and antenna adapter.

Customer Reviews

Panasonic TH-50PZ700U 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV 5
Excellent. TV came quickly with no damage, which was a concern because of its size and delicacy!!

top of the line, beware burn in gamers!5
straight up, i did my research for about a year while i saved money. this is the best set you will find for your money, everything you've read about it is true, except one thing. Burn-in. Gamers beware. Even if you watch HD-TV with a symbol in the corner like 'TLC' you'll get burn in if the icon doesn't move. I have this set and a good friend does too. what really upsets me is playing my ps3 through this. Sharp as a razor yes. adding a static wallpaper for a custom theme though is a BAD idea. Try it, you'll see. then play some music and turn the visualizer on. if you cant see the burn in, then get your eyes checked. play rock band or guitar hero FOR AN HOUR (which is'nt hard to do), turn any white background on, look for the game icon burn ins (rock meter, etc). Generally they go away after a couple hours, but its frustrating. BOTH my set and my good friend's set do the same thing. even a half hour of a static image will create burn in. Granted its better now a days than it used to be, at least it goes away after some time.... if you're a gamer, pick up the sharp aquos. no burn-in on an lcd set; and the runner up as far as a great picture goes (reds are a little funny at times though). Reviews are slightly lower, but hell, you could at least leave a game system on pause without havening to worry about switching the inputs to avoid burn in. Im serious folks. take heed. great set, bad for gamers and burn-in. sharp as a razor though....

Incredible picture, Incredible HDTV5
This Panasonic Plasma HDTV is simply an incredible product. The picture quality stands out as nothing short of impressive. I found this HDTV to strike the perfect balance between excellent quality and price. After months of searching for a quality product to invest my money in, this HDTV does not disappoint.

While there has been some history of people expressing concern about the picture brightness of plasma flat-panels (i.e. being too dim), I have found this Panasonic to provide ample brightness of picture. As a matter of fact, a description in my house of the picture is how the colors "glow." Of course this is referring the the brighter colors. This leads me to another aspect of the picture, the darker colors. This is where this plasma really stands out. The darker colors are well defined with deep blacks. The grays and blacks are well delineated. For someone who likes to view a lot of movies, the strength of it's display of darker colors is something that I have found impressive. Additionally, the plasma is excellent in it's display of motion. For a sports fan, such as myself, this plasma does an excellent job of displaying the motion of sports.

Also of note with this plasma is that the performance of the speakers turned out to be a pleasant surprise. One of my wife's first comments about this Panasonic was the good quality of sound from it's speakers.

After having this Panasonic for about 4 months, I've had no problems with this product and have found it to be free of defects.

While I've spent much time providing a "glowing" review of this set, I'll turn to any perceived weaknesses. They are few, and I almost have to search for them.

One of the main weaknesses that I found is the need for tender, love & care that the plasma requires. Specifically, plasmas can be at danger for screen "burn-in" by leaving a static image on the screen for too long. While I have not had any burn-in problems, I do remain vigilant about not leaving the tv on while unattended. At least this helps me to save on my electricity bill as these HDTVs are known to be energy hogs. As a precaution, I do not leave letterbox shows on the screen for hours uninterrupted. My complaint regarding this weakness is that the manual mentions image retention/screen burn-in, but the manual does not clearly define the length of time before there is danger of burn-in.

One last weakness that I found is that there are only 2 HDMI connection ports. While that is just enough for me, it would be nice to have an extra just in case.

In conclusion, I am extremely impressed with this Panasonic plasma. I am really glad that I choose this set, and my family and I get much enjoyment out of it. I view this set as being worth every penny that I paid for it. Panasonic has won me over.

Amazing color reproduction

The incredible black reproduction of a Panasonic High-Definition Plasma TV results in impressive contrast and beautiful, natural colors. So you'll get warm, accurate skin tones, gorgeous greens, breathtaking blues and vivid reds. For color that's as rich and bold as life itself, look to a Panasonic Plasma TV.

Consistent brightness from any angle

A Panasonic Plasma combines anti-glare and anti-reflection technology with the natural light-emitting properties of plasma, to give you a super-wide viewing range with a crisp, beautiful image from almost any angle.

Smooth, graceful motion

When you're watching sports or movies with fast-motion graphics, you want a TV that can keep up with the action. With over 900 lines of moving picture, self-illuminating plasma displays eliminate afterimages in fast-action scenes. So whether you're watching a sporting event or an action-packed movie, you'll always get the most impressive viewing experience possible.

1,000,000:1 Contrast

The Panasonic's Real Black system (a pre-discharge suppression system) and improved panel production processes combine to reproduce outstanding blacks with superb contrast. Each image is richly expressive, from bright scense, like scorching desert landscapes, to dark cave scenes. Compare the image produced by conventional HDTV on the left to the Real Black image produced on the right

More Colors

Viera HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.
  • Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
  • Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
  • Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

deep color eliminates visible color banding

Deep Color

Where x.v. color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color.
  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
  • Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
  • Enables increased contrast ratio
  • Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white.

Connectivity

Viera flat panel HDTVs interact with an array of high-definition devices and services, making it easy for consumers to access and enjoy content as never before. As of 2008, Viera Link is compatible with Onkyo and Yamaha home theater systems.
SD Cards Videos and stills recorded on SD cards can easily be viewed via the SD slots on Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc players and Viera HDTVs.
Viera Link Viera Link means easy connectivity via HDMI cables. Finally, consumers can easily operate their Blu-Ray Disc players, DVD recorders and home theater systems with a single remote control device.
network with PCs Equipped with an RGB input terminal, VIERA can connect with your PC and serve as a large-screen monitor.

long life

Long Life

Panasonic plasma panels are rated to last 100,000 hours, which is about 30 years of regular or 11 years of non-stop usage before the brightness of the display is halved.

Customer Reviews

Great picture and price. A few small issues, but still a nice TV.4
I research and stressed about a $1000+ TV for several weeks. I was going to purchase an LCD, but once a salesman educated me on a plasma, I was sold.

Plasma is so much better than an LCD. Don't buy an LCD just because they are popular now. There are a ton of them in the stores and online only because it wasn't until recently that manufacturers could make an LCD affordably in large sizes. So they are, but plasma is a better picture for the same price. Better color, high definition, contrast, viewing angle, and nearly indestructible screen. The only advantage of an LCD is that they tend to be lighter.

The screen was a big selling point for me. I have a 3-year old that likes to touch the pictures. This can damage an LCD, so too can cleaning off the finger prints. The plasma is just solid glass and has been "wii-proofed", capable of taking a wii-remote that accidently gets thrown at the screen.

Also, I stressed over the 120mhz vs. 60 mhz for an LCD. The 120mhz promised less image blue for fast moving objects and sports, but you pay up for it. I saw a little Wimbledon while at best buy and the ball did see fuzzy at times. Well, a Plasma is at 480 mhz image refresh rate, so you don't have to worry about 120 vs. 60. ALso check out the contrast ratios. They are significantly higher on a Plasma. I'm not a huge spec person because they don't mean everything. But there is a difference between 1,000,000:1 vs. 10,000:1 on an LCD. So go with the plasma.

I did have some issues with Butterfly photo. The mispriced the extended warranty i also purchased and had to call back to correct it. When the warranty showed up in the mail, it was for an LCD, not plasma. SO I had to call back. Then since I had the item in my Amazon cart, I saw they had lowered the price and Butterfly would not honor their own price reduction just 24 hours after purchasing it. It had not even been shipped yet and they claimed they could not cancel the order and resell it at the lower price. BS. However, I purchased the item over the phone from butterfly, not online. Their phone price was lower than the AMZN price and the extended warranty was on special, which I would not have know about. So I saved about $150 just by calling, so I'm not too upset by the $50 price reduction. They will try to sell you other things, like cables or power units, just say you'll think about it.

As for as some small issues with the TV. The channel change button are on the side of the TV, but still tucked several inches behind it. There are a little difficult to see if the TV is in a cabinet, which mine is. Plus my 3-year old can no longer change the channels. She used to be able to switch between the DVD or Leapfrog games, but cannot do it without help now. Also, adding components to the TV requires several different cables. The TV accepts many inputs, but only two or each. I had been connection my with the same blue, red, green, white, and red cables. But after the DVD and PVR, I have to buy different cables to connect the cable box, VRC or game consol.

Other than that. A great TV. Definately go with the Plasma. The old burn-in issues of old have been solved and its so much brighter, crisper, and worth the money compared to an LCD.

LIKE SITTING IN A 3-D ART MUSEUM5
I've been following this 42 inch Panasonic model through its growth and changes for six years waiting to finish college so I could give tv undivided attention. This is the most exciting piece of electronics I have ever purchased, or ever owned. I put up full-length black, black-out curtains which cut out any glaring from direct sunlight during the day, and provide a theatre atmosphere. The high def channels (Time-Warner) are so life-like and 3-D in appearance, I sometimes forget I am not actually in the scene, wherever it is.

The sound is certainly adequate on its own, if one is not an audiophile, but I wanted the Sony home theatre over the Panasonic and was worried they wouldn't be compatible. Much to my delight, the cable DVR and Sony Home Theatre are all controlled by the Panasonic Viera by just simply selecting the HDMI input source (there are three here) and naming the components I wanted to use. There is no hunting for numbers or holding and aiming remotes for a half-hour to find each component setting, as Panasonic Viera does that for you INSTANTLY, even if it is another brand. Push the Panasonic remote power button and the home theatre and DVR are started, vice versa when turning off.

I have also connected, by HDMI, a new Playstation 3 (thanks again Amazon) through the game port, and it is UNBELIEVABLE PICTURE QUALITY. Panasonic recognized them immediately and the menus on this tv are one push button drop down and simple to navigate. Likewise, the new Wii Console (from Amazon) is into another input using their video cables and the picture is crisp, clear and stunning. I chose the pre-selected game mode picture quality for the Wii, and custom picture settings for the cable and PS3. As I switch between them, the Panasonic remembers my screen settings for each so I don't have to "switch" back and forth manually as I change programming.

I'm sure I don't know half the things the TV does yet (purchased May 27th), but you cannot go wrong with this tv. I am sitting about twelve feet away in an apartment and it is just the perfect size screen. Next, is connecting my laptop to the PC input and "flying" Microsoft X flight simulator. That is going to be exciting!!!!!

The delivery took a while about two weeks, but the white glove service was excellent (actually two men who used to work for years delivering Sears tv's) and they were extremely knowledgable, helpful, and professional. If you want state of the art technology, with picture quality that passes for art every time, you want this particular plasma!!!!!!! By the way, I am a 58 year old single, female, and yes, while I am pretty technically literate and experienced, you don't have to be with this TV. Just plug and play!!!!

Big purchase, but worth it in the end5
I went to HH Gregg and they quoted a much higher price than Amazon offered, sales tax of 9.5 percent on top of it, with an expensive warranty, here in Tennessee. They even did an "internet search" for me in the store. When I told them I could do better, the sales tactic was to tell me that these sites that were cheaper were "shady".

I got the TV for my mother in law, and it was delivered in pristine condition to her house. Overall, cheaper than local vendors. It works great! I would skip Amazon's warranty, unless you can't feasibly replace it (and then you probably shouldn't buy it if that's the case, but that's another story). The warranty doesn't cover a major failure of plasma TVs in general, and from what I hear the service is terrible. They take your money easily, but everything else is a headache.

But, I have never bought a TV before on the internet, so I was nervous, but it all worked out well in the end. I'm satisfied with it. The colors/brightness are brilliant, looks great. Works great. Would highly recommend.
